Radio Gaga

What do you know about radio? Huge topic.

Actually, the history of radio is directly linked to technology. Some scientists worked on wireless communication thanks to electromagnetic waves. The discovery of electromagnetic waves including radio waves was made by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz in the 1880s. And then we know the time goes by, radio adapted itself to each decade.

Guglielmo Marconi – he was also working on wireless telegraphy research- and his first radio receivers.

Here is an interesting book I had the opportunity to read, written by Michele Hilmes: Radio Reader – Essays in the cultural history of Radio

I was last morning walking on the street listening to radio on my smartphone, a new song from unknown artist was running on. How wonderful is this? This dinosaur way of listening and broadcasting audio content is helping me discovering new songs. Love that idea. Note, there are more than 15,000 radios in the US can you imagine how many radios there are in the entire world?! That’s huge opportunity for emerging artists isn’t?

Some of you will come up with the « playlist ranking » as a great way to make your artist be known. But still, it’s not in my hands!

I lately discovered a music analytics tool that allows professionals from the music industry to monitor radios worldwide. It is called Soundcharts (here is the link). These guys just killed the game… each artist can see how many plays they have on each radio, in every country. Genius. Here is the Airplays for the artist I was listening last morning:

LeonxLeon from Soundcharts App

By the way check his Spotify – very smooth to start the day eheh

That’s all for now, cheers 🙂
